That’s Why We Work to Make Life Better
The title of a 2016 text-based drawing by Morag Keil describes the debut collaboration between London’s Project Native Informant and Munich’s Deborah Schamoni. Of the same generation, both galleries were established in 2013.
The socially critical practices of Morag Keil and Judith Hopf mine the tropes and images of our lives, online and off, rendering them into drawings, sculptures and videos, often with tongue-in-cheek humour. Similarly interested in the everyday, Amalia Ulman explores the relationship between consumerism and identity, class imitation and social deception, with a particular focus on the idea of “cute” and “pretty”.
The collective DIS and the artist Eric Sidner uncannily address appearances. DIS creates airbrushed, digital stock-images that explore the tension between popular culture and institutional critique. This concern, as well as the mechanisms of the market and lifestyle management, is also present in the work of GCC (2013).
Working with materials like silicone and epoxy, Eric Sidner fashions glossy sculptures that simultaneously attract and repel. Like the images of DIS, his sculptures question the layers, and their stories, behind the surface-level.
