Art Cologne 2024

A.L. Steiner

07.11. – 10.11.2024

  • For the debut time at a fair, Deborah Schamoni is pleased to present a solo exhibition by American artist A.L. Steiner in the Neumarkt area at this year’s Art Cologne. The installation consists of one of Steiner’s iconic photo collages, which extends across the entire stand. Created especially for the fair, the work will consist of photocopies mounted directly on the walls, transforming the stand into an immersive visual experience.

A.L. Steiner is an interdisciplinary artist working across photography, video, installation, collage, and performance, often in collaboration with other artists. Best known for her large-scale, site-specific photocollages, Steiner uses these immersive compositions as a form of visual resistance against authority and hierarchical systems. In her practice, she transforms the overwhelming flood of everyday imagery—often featuring her queer community of friends and lovers—into expansive installations. Through these collages, Steiner critically interrogates social structures and power dynamics from a queer, eco-feminist perspective. Her work is bold, irreverent, humorous, and deeply personal, challenging societal norms while maintaining a distinct political edge.

A.L. Steiner (b. 1967 in Brooklyn, NY) teaches at the Yale School of Art in New Haven. Recent exhibitions include Nottingham Contemporary (2023), 80WSE, New York (2023), and Deborah Schamoni (2023). Her works are part of permanent collections at institutions such as the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA, and the Hammer Museum. She is a co-founder of WAGE and co-curator of the queer feminist project Ridykeulous.
